And then in the middle of it all, down it came in a trajectory towards the heart of downtown… unleashing particles of energy that blanketed the sky Then, rising above the buildings, it reared itself, balls of energy and fire building in it’s palms The coming terror filled hours, brought to a calm, when it…

Mmm, cookies.
Just to be sure… I assume this is organised fireworks (As in: organised by the city or district)?
Wow… we could use that too. Here, everybody can buy and light their own fireworks, and in addition a few cities have organised displays. Sorry for rambling like an old man, but the fact that every sane and insane person can buy their own stash of fireworks has not really worked out the way we would have liked (first estimates for this New Year are just in: EUR 10.000.000 worth in damages from fireworks in the Netherlands; this, according to the authorities and/or the press, is “normal”, meaning it’s not really different from previous years. To be honest, I don’t know what is “normal” about it, but hey, who am I?…).
But that’s just a bit of rambling… What’s really important, and what your photos show, is that organised firework shows are beautiful. You’ve nailed it, these are some great shots.
Aurora Borealis indeed!
Really?! Just for me to be sure… In the Netherlands, no municipality sponsors there own fireworks display for it’s citizens? It’s just individuals who are free to buy their own, and set off themselves? If so, that is bizarre!
I mean, we of course can purchase and light off our own too (I mean, this is America, and you know how we love our God given right to blow things up!)… well, actually, that is new for the state I currently reside in, that one could legally purchase fireworks, as of this, er – last year, 2011. Before that, we would have people making illegal runs to the state south of us, where they were legal, and bringing them up here to set off… as of the year that ended this past weekend though, Nebraska made it legal to both sell and set off.
Really, no city, or district in the Netherlands, or heck, even just a big conglomerate in the area (these one’s I took on New Year’s Eve was actually not sponsored by the city… in fact, I don’t think the city ever does, it’s always the local newspaper, or as saturday nights, that you see in the photos, it was sponsored by TD Ameritrade a big wig brokerage firm)… anyway though, no one ever puts on a fireworks display in your neck of the woods? That would be sad to never be able to see a big scale, planned, professional and organized fireworks display, but just local yahoos blowing themselves and everything up!
Anyway, thanks, Jacco, I appreciate it! What I am working on this month, is getting all my older photographs finally up on the ol’ site here, and have several other of fireworks, also in black and white, that you may be interested in
There are *some* cities arranging a professional fireworks display, but it is not very common. I’ve never seen one, for that matter. Of course there are other special occasions where professional fireworks are set off, but then again… I rarely -if ever- seem to visit those.
I should have known that “your” fireworks display is sponsored by some company instead of being funded by the city. Makes sense. “This fireworks was brought to you by TGI Friday’s!”
Anyway, looking forward to seeing more old and new work.
